Counseling is a process whereby people of all ages and backgrounds can learn ways to help each other to free themselves from the effects of past distressing experiences. It is more a therapy of exchange of information with a professional who is qualified to judge what and how the best form of treatment may be prescribed to the person that is disturbed.
While there may be people who have the qualifications to provide such therapy and have gone through the process of getting educated through normal channels, there are others who have sought and acquired the qualification through an online process as well. A master’s degree in counseling acquired online is in no way a qualification of lesser standing than a degree issued by a normal channel. All courses followed are the same. The only change perhaps, being in the process of imparting the actual education. While one would require the presence of the student at the campus, the other offers that same education to a student from via the internet.
Some of the best universities offer online master’s degrees in counseling that are accredited, accepted and recognized by all institutions across the world. One such institution that offers online courses is the Concordia University which allows students to apply for courses in school or professional counseling degrees. The Walden University also has such courses available where a person can apply for either a course or a master’s program that is entirely online. There may be a need to attend some classes in person but most of the course will be online and a degree will be made available to students who successfully complete the course.
Students can choose from a variety of subjects that are available for a master’s degree in counseling. Though having a degree in general counseling may be acceptable, specialization often dictates the kind of success that will follow and it is in this area that a master’s degree helps in a big way.7
